Best Koodo Mobile Cell Phone Plans

First launched in the year 2008 by TELUS, Koodo now has more than 1 million subscribers in Canada and is one of the leading service providers in the country.

AdvertisementDesigned for younger consumers, Koodo Mobile plans are quite easy to understand. They are competitively priced. Not to mention, they are packed with great features and a lot of add-ons to go around. As a subsidiary of Telus, Koodo Mobile offers great coverage as well as a strong presence in mobile retailers. Unlike its parent company, Koodo Mobile plans don’t require a fixed-term contract.

Koodo is a relatively new carrier. It started in 2008 as Telus’ push to gain a stronger foothold with younger audiences. This is one of the reasons Koodo’s prepaid offer is so varied. Combine that with really good coverage and this company offers great value for money indeed.

Koodo Mobile, a subsidiary of Telus, is in direct competition with Wind, Fido, Virgin, and similar discount carriers. It offers postpaid and prepaid plans which range between $15 and $75. To be exact, the postpaid plans start at $25 and prepaid at $15.

The unlimited messaging for all plans is among the main attractions with this carrier. And those who need a new device can get their smartphones financed through the Tab program.

As for the actual offers, they come with everything you might expect. In addition to unlimited messaging, the Tab program, for example, features unlimited calls. There’s a cap on data usage, but you can easily purchase more data if need be.

Should you decide to bring your own device, you’ll get a somewhat better rate. But you need to make sure that the phone supports HSPA and LTE frequency on Koodo.

Every so often, the carrier comes out with promotions and deals that offer good value for money. So, it’s worth waiting a few months for a new deal.

And those who tend to drop their phones a lot can get a device protection plan. For Android devices, it’s $9 per month, and iPhone protection sets you back $7 to $14 per month.

Best High Data Plan – Tab Extra Large

With Koodo’s highest plan you’re getting 10 GB of so-called Shock-Free data. But what does this actually mean?

Shock-Free allows you to take a break and pause the data. This is to protect from an overage that might put a major dent in your monthly bill. To make sure you know how much data is left, Koodo sends alerts when you spend 50% and 90% of your limit.

The moment you cap the data limit, the consumption gets automatically paused. And again, you get a notification. If you need more data, you can unpause the service straight from your phone. The best thing is that this is available on all postpaid plans.

Other than that, the high data plan includes unlimited talking and texting. Plus, the plan supports Call Waiting, Call Display, Conference Calling, and Voicemail.

When you purchase in the retail store, there’s a $40 fee to establish the connection. But no fees apply should you decide to place your order online.

This service sets you back $75 per month and you should factor in additional Tab charges. The extra charges apply if you decide to get a new phone via the carrier or include additional services.

For example, you can get an iPhone 11 Pro Max for $30 per month with this plan. Nevertheless, this offer stands only if you order online.

Best Talk and Text Plan – Tab Small

Those who don’t need a lot of data on their plan should find Tab Small more than sufficient. It offers unlimited messaging and calls throughout Canada. Plus, you can include “US and International Easy Roam” without any upfront costs.

You should know that Easy Roam is available with all other Koodo Tab programs. And if you order services online, the box in front of the Easy Roam is checked by default.

Like on the Tab Extra Large, Voicemail, Conference Calling, etc. are supported. And you’d need to pay the $40 fee if you purchase at Koodo’s retail store.

At $35 per month, this is the cheapest plan on Koodo. If you bring your own phone, you can save an additional $5.

However, Coolpad Snap is an off-brand phone Koodo offers with a small charge on Tab Small.

To be exact, the carrier divides the price of the phone into $5 installments over a period of twenty months. If you need data on Tab Small, you pay what you use. And Koodo charges $10 for every 100MB     of additional data.

Best Data Only Plans

There are two data-only plans on Koodo and the company classifies both under Tab Small programs.

The plans offer 1GB and 4GB of data and they set you back $15 and $20 respectively. The carrier also includes the “Bring your own device” option. But you’re not actually making any savings if you opt to use your old device.

That being said, the regular Small Tab data-only plan allows you to include up to $240 on the contract towards a new device. The carrier’s website indicates that this money can go towards a new smartphone. However, the data only plans are available only for tablets.

These plans don’t include any minutes or messages. And the carrier requires you to maintain a mobile plan as well. Otherwise, there’s a possibility for Koodo to terminate the tablet plan based on the limitation of the company’s Service Terms.

The good news is that data-only plans have Shock-Free data, so there’s no way to ramp up the bill without you knowing about it. Roaming rates apply for both plans and you can’t roll over the data to the next month.

There’s also an option to turn on Easy Roam. But you’d need to get in touch with the customer service to determine if the same terms apply as for regular mobile plans.

Best Prepaid Plan

Koodo seems to go the extra mile to cater to the needs of its prepaid customers. These plans don’t require fixed-term contracts or credit checks. And the payments are made easy with the company’s Automatic Top-ups.

When it comes to the actual offer, you have seven different options to choose from. And there are certain features all of them share:

  • No limit on international picture messaging and texting
  • All calling features – Call display, Call waiting, Conference calling, etc.
  • You can purchase a Koodo Prepaid SIM on Amazon or at their retail store

The cheapest prepaid plan is $15 and offers 250MB of data on top of the common features mentioned above. If you need more than that, you can get 500MB and 500 minutes for province-wide calls in Canada. This option costs $25.

Heavy internet users are also covered for. You can choose 1GB, 5GB, 7GB, or 10GB. In terms of the included services, these are pretty much the same as Tab contracts. The pricing, amount of data, and calling and texting are the same, but there are two key differences.

You can’t turn on Easy Roam on any of the prepaid plans and there’s no Shock-Free data. But this isn’t surprising and Koodo offers specials boosts to compensate.

Popular and Exclusive Features on Koodo

Regardless of the type of plan you choose, Koodo offers perks that can put a smile on the faces of even the most demanding users. These are the features you should know about:

Shock-Free Data

As stated, this feature allows you to take a break from data consumption and you get usage notifications. Plus, there’s an option to track everything in real-time using the Koodo Self Service.

Ideally, Koodo would also offer this feature on prepaid plans as well. Or, at least, send a notification when the data is close to being exhausted.

True Nort Affordability

This isn’t exactly a feature, but a badge that signals the company’s dedication to offering good prices for everybody. The badge signals that the plans follow the given benchmark for affordability.

To be exact, affordability for wireless services for families. For example, this should save a family of four about $1,000 per year on telecommunication services.

Easy Roam

As one of the best and most popular features, Easy Roam may save a ton of money to frequent travelers. The article has already stated that you can activate it for free, but there’s more.

When outside Canada, you’re not billed per-use rates. Instead, Koodo charges you for the days of use. The rates of which are $8 for the U.S. and $12 for international usage. Of course, the price is for each day you spend outside the country.

Booster Add-Ons

There are about fifteen different Booster Add-Ons which apply to prepaid plans only. The add-ons are divided into three categories – data, talk, and text boost.

In addition, you can also boost the roaming services to compensate for the lack of Easy Roam. The boosts aren’t that expensive and range from $5 to $20.

Koodo’s Network Coverage

Run by Telus, Koodo has nationwide coverage that extends all the way into the Rocky Mountains. For example, the switch to Koodo from Public Mobile should be unnoticeable for most users.

The service is very strong no matter where you choose to go. Should you plan a camping trip in the Waterton National Park, there’s no need to worry you’ll end up off the grid. As for some closer-to-home scenarios, Koodo’s reception is also strong in basements and elevator shafts.

In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find dead spots on Koodo. According to the carrier, the network actually covers 99% of the population and operates via a coast-to-coast 4G. The exact frequencies Koodo operates on are:

  • LTE – 1700/2100 MHz (AWS)
  • HSPA – 800 MHz as well as 1900 MHz
  • LTE-a (LTE Advanced) – 700 MHz as well as 2600 MHz

It’s worth noting that HSPA, LTE, and 4G frequencies from Telus, Bell, Virgin, Rogers, and Fido are also compatible. However, those from Mobilicity. Wind, Videotron are not. Furthermore, the carrier still doesn’t provide 5G coverage, if this might change in the near future.

In most areas, Koodo offers all three frequencies, bar Manitoba and Nunavit. Here’s a list of coverage based on the given frequencies:

  • Alberta – LTE, LTE-a, HSPA
  • British Columbia – LTE, LTE-a, HSPA
  • Manitoba – HSPA
  • New Brunswick – LTE, LTE-a, HSPA
  • Newfoundland and Labrador – LTE, LTE-a, HSPA
  • Northwest Territories – HSPA and LTE
  • Nova Scotia – LTE, LTE-a, HSPA
  • Nunavut – HSPA
  • Ontario – LTE, LTE-a, HSPA
  • Prince Edward Island – LTE, LTE-a, HSPA
  • Quebec – LTE, LTE-a, HSPA
  • Saskatchewan – LTE, LTE-a, HSPA
  • Yukon – HSPA and LTE

It’s important to note that LTE-a is strong in most urban areas, yet this doesn’t mean you’ll end up without the internet on your camping trip. The speeds should be sufficient for browsing, social media, e-mailing, etc.

More About Koodo Mobile

During the first year of operation, Koodo had roaring success with its target audience. In part, this was due to straightforward plans that didn’t include fees for system charges from the carrier. Truth be told, this was so popular that other brands started to emulate the offer.

Then in 2011, Koodo came up with a completely new line-up of mobile plans. This remained largely unchanged to this day, bar certain price and data fluctuations. And it also prompted the appearance of similar offers from the competition.

Be that as it may, Koodo’s plans and user experience received a lot of recognition from the Canadian Wireless Purchase Experience Study. For instance, the carrier was ranked number one for the best customer experience. What’s more, this happened in three consecutive years – 2012, 2013, and 2014.

On the other hand, the carrier received its fair share of notoriety in 2012. Namely, the company decided to remove per-second billing. Only users weren’t informed before the fact. But that’s in the past and far from a deal-breaker.

Why Choose Koodo Mobile?

  • As compared to other carriers, you can find larger data packages with Koodo which include economical prices for unlimited talk times and texting.
  • You won’t have to pay any charges for activation or for accessing their systems since Koodo is a discounted wireless provider.
  • You can select the data plan according to the amount of data you need, and Koodo offers fixed data plans as well.
  • You have the option of choosing just the voice and text package without data. Or, larger packages that include high-speed internet services with up to 10GB of data.
  • Koodo offers you GSM technology and 4G services at 1700/2100 MHz.

Understanding Koodo’s Network Coverage

Given that Koodo’s 4G network is the same as TELUS’s, it covers close to 99% of Canada.

  • 42% HSPA+ (4G)
  • 39% LTE (4G)
  • 11% HSPA (3G)
  • 7% UMTS (3G)

Here are some this to know before signing up with Koodo Mobile:

  • The service does not support CDMA devices in Manitoba.
  • The service does not support prepaid packages for CDMA devices.
  • The service does not offer local numbers in specific areas such as Nunavut, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories.
  • The service only offers half the monthly allowance of usage for SMS messaging, data, and voice minutes in Manitoba.

Using Koodo for Long Distance Calls

You can call anywhere in Canada and expect to be billed according to the monthly minute allowance you have. If you need to place calls to any international country, you pay 50 cents for every minute. And, if you have used up all your Anytime Minutes, Koodo will charge you the regular rate per minute. In addition, you’ll pay a charge of 50 cents per minute.

In case you expect to make frequent international calls, Koodo has two packages for you to choose from that help you economize on your bills.

  • International Long Distance Saver: Under this plan, you can pay $3 a month and place calls to UK, China, Hong Kong, India, France, Australia, US, Germany, and Mexico at 5 cents for every minute. Place calls to the Philippines at 15 cents per minute and Pakistan at 10 cents a minute.
  • International Calling Plans: Under this plan, you can buy monthly packages for $10 to $20 for unlimited calls to specific countries such as the UK, France, China, Hong Kong, and the US. For calls to India, you can buy a package for $20 per month for 1,000 minutes. If you use up your monthly allowance, you’ll be charged at 2 cents per minute for all the additional calls you make.

How Does Shock-Free Data Work?

So you don’t have to worry about using more than your monthly data allotment. First, you can track your data usage through Self-Serve. Koodo notifies customers when they’ve used 50%, 90%, and 100% of their total data for the month. Also, Koodo pauses your data allotment when you’ve exceeded your data limit. Then, you’ll be prompted to use additional data if you want to. With such features, you can control your data use. You won’t have to pay for an additional monthly charge when you don’t want to.

Only Koodo Mobile offers shock-free data plans in Canada. This is how the feature works:

  • Koodo Mobile will notify you when you’ve reached 50%, 90% and 100% of your monthly data limit.
  • The network will pause your data as you reach your monthly limit. From your smartphone, you can also choose if you want to use more data.
  • Track data usage in real-time through Self Serve.
Truly, Koodo Mobile is Canada’s happiest network. You should be elated to know that Koodo runs on the Telus network. That means they offer users strong nationwide coverage. They operate through Canada’s fastest and largest 4G LTE network, which covers about 99% of the country’s population.
Koodo Mobile operates using the following networks:
• HSPA networks operate at 850 MHz and 1900 MHz frequencies
• LTE network runs at 1700/2100 MHz (Advanced Wireless Services)
• LTE Advanced network (LTE-a) uses 2600 and 700 MHz
Thanks to their 4G network, Koodo Mobile can cover all the Canadian properties and territories to a certain extent. If you’re planning on using your own phone, make sure it can run on these frequencies.
Their network coverage is only one of the reasons why users stay with Koodo.

What Makes Koodo Mobile Unique?

Listed below are a few other reasons why mobile users prefer Koodo.

  • $50 + $50 Credit: Koodo Mobile has a Refer-a-Friend program in which they give away $50 in bill credits to users who can get a pal to activate with Koodo. You will receive this referral credit in five monthly installments of $10 per month. Friends who are referred to Koodo will also receive $50 of credit when all the necessary terms and conditions are met.
  • Shock-free data: As already mentioned, only Koodo Mobile offers such a feature. They alert you when you’re close to reaching your monthly data limit. The network will also pause your data to prevent unexpected overage charges.
  • Easy Roam: Subscribers can now enjoy Easy Roam add-ons. You can add it for free and use it with your existing Koodo Mobile plan when you travel overseas. With Easy Roam, you will only be charged whenever you consume your plan’s data, texts, or minutes.

Does Koodo Mobile Charge for International Roaming?

Only users with postpaid plans can use international roaming. If you have a prepaid plan, you can add Boosters to use your data, and send voice or text messages while in the US. Here are the rates for international roaming:

Easy Roam US

The daily Easy Roam fee in the US costs $8. It’s valid for 24 hours. You will be charged when you send a text, use data overseas, make a phone call or answer one. That includes calls to numbers in the US as well as Canada. Koodo plan users with shock-free data will continue to receive alerts when they are travelling. Plus, they can opt to use additional data at the domestic rate.

Easy Roam International

Koodo Mobile subscribers who are going beyond North America will be charged a $12 per day Easy Roam fee. This applies whenever you answer or make a phone call, send a text, or use your data. That includes phone calls to numbers registered to Canada and the current country you are in. If your plan comes with a shock-free data feature, you will continue to receive notifications about your monthly limit overseas. And you still have the option to use more data at the domestic rate.

Log in to Koodo Mobile’s Self Serve section to add Easy Roam for free. Another way to activate this feature is to text ROAM to 7626.
The moment you arrive at your destination, you will receive a confirmation message saying that Easy Roam is currently active.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kodoo Mobile’s Plans

We’ve gathered some commonly asked questions to give you more information about Koodo Mobile and their data plans. Browse the list below to find the answers you’ve been looking for.

Having extended coverage means getting wider network coverage, far beyond the area of Koodo’s HSPA+ and LTE networks. Through their wireless carrier partners, they are able to extend the coverage of your mobile plan.

Only Koodo Mobile’s postpaid customers with phones that support HSPA+ or LTE can take advantage of extended coverage. In addition, your main residence and billing address must be within the range of Koodo’s networks. It’s good to know this feature won’t have an effect on your usage or billing.

Data and call sessions will disconnect as you enter the areas covered by extended coverage. Within a few seconds, your phone will be on the extended network. An EXT sign will replace Koodo at the top part of the phone’s screen once it does.
After the reconnection, you will have to redial a phone number or restart a data session to pick up where you left off.

What’s the difference between Koodo’s HSPA+ and LTE networks and its extended network?

Areas covered by the extended network have lower data speeds compared to areas within Koodo’s networks. Let’s say you like streaming videos. When you’re on the extended network, your videos will usually take a longer time to load. In certain areas, some applications might not even be available.

The same goes for your data, text, and voice services. You are limited to as much as half the total monthly usage of each service. When you go over the limit, you may be disconnected from the extended network.

Will I be charged for making long-distance calls within Canada?

With Koodo Mobile’s nationwide plans, you can call friends and loved ones from anywhere in the country without having to pay for long-distance service charges. Just take note that all long-distance calls will still depend on your plan’s anytime minutes.

What long-distance options are available for prepaid users?

Boosters. Take advantage of these add-ons to make local, long-distance or international calls. Whether you need long-distance minutes, anytime minutes, or data, you can add a Talk or Data Booster to your base plan.
Need to call someone from a difference Canadian province? If so, a Talk Booster add-on is what you need. You can get a call through to any province or territory in Canada. To make international calls, your base plan needs any of the Long-Distance Booster add-ons. With it, you can make calls to 50 international destinations.

What travel roaming options are available for prepaid plans?

US Roaming Boosters are available for Koodo Mobile users who plan on using their phone across the border. All 50 states are covered by these services. That includes Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

I will be staying in a foreign country for more than a day, but I don’t want to use Easy Roam.

What other options do I have?

Use a local number during your time abroad. Before your trip, have your phone unlocked so you can buy a local SIM card at wherever you’re heading. Call 1-866-99-KOODO to unlock your phone. As of December 2017, Canadian law has required all merchants to sell only unlocked phones. In case you have an older phone, you can easily have it unlocked any time.

What is the Seasonal Hold plan?

Koodo’s Seasonal Hold plan is ideal for businessmen and travellers. This $15 per month plan only covers six months, so users can retain their Koodo account and phone number when they travel abroad. It temporarily suspends your services, including data, voice, and text messaging.

Only customers leaving Canada for more than a month are eligible to purchase the Seasonal Hold plan.

Prepaid plans can provide a lot of advantages like unlimited calls and even data access too. If you’re considering signing up for a prepaid plan with Koodo Mobile, here are our top plan recommendations:

  • $15 Prepaid Plan – Most Affordable Option
  • $35 Prepaid Plan – Best Unlimited Prepaid Plan
  • $55 Prepaid Plan – Best Overall Plan

Koodo Mobile $15 Prepaid Plan

If you’re looking for something cheap or affordable, the $15 prepaid plan from Koodo Mobile is one of the best options available to you. It’s the cheapest base plan you can choose and it’s highly customizable too, giving you a lot of potential add-ons (or ‘Boosters’) to upgrade and enhance your package. The best cheap prepaid plan from Koodo is this $15 plan. It doesn’t give you a whole lot, but the Boosters are great. Once you buy a Booster, like a 1GB Data Booster, for example, it won’t ever expire until you’ve used it. So, you can hold onto it and use it gradually, at your own pace, without needing to feel rushed or worrying about losing cash on the deal. Examples of Boosters include 1GB of data, 600 anytime minutes, 300 long distance minutes, and US roaming data, minutes, and texts too. It is worth noting, however, that the $15 plan does require a Talk Booster if you want to use any kind of voice feature. Overall, this is a perfect plan for people who don’t need to use much data and prefer to keep their costs low.

Koodo Mobile $35 Prepaid Plan

The $35 prepaid plan from Koodo Mobile is the lowest price tier to come with unlimited province-wide calls. So, if you’re looking for the most affordable plan with unlimited minutes, this is the one to choose. It also comes with unlimited international text and picture messages, like all other Koodo Mobile prepaid plans. This prepaid plan essentially lets you keep in touch with family, friends, and other people in your life without needing to worry about your minutes running out and buying new add-ons all the time. It’s the perfect fit for people who love to talk but don’t want to invest in an overly expensive plan. On the downside, the $35 plan doesn’t come with any data, so you will need to buy Boosters if you want to access internet-based services away from Wi-Fi networks. This can be a minor disadvantage, but it’s offset by the inclusion of those all-important unlimited minutes, helping this plan stand out as one of the best overall.

Koodo Mobile $55 Prepaid Plan

If the budget isn’t a problem for you and you want the best overall Koodo Mobile prepaid plan, we must recommend the $55 option. This plan comes with 2GB of data, which is a very nice advantage for those moments when you’re out and about and need to use data-reliant features and services. Data is so important these days and it’s almost impossible to live without it, so the 2GB of this plan makes it one of the best choices. 2GB of data can be more than enough for most people to rely on for a typical month. It won’t allow you to stream movies and music all day long direct from your data, but it’s just right for some casual web browsing, small downloads, sending emails, and making use of various apps and services throughout the day. The $55 plan also comes with unlimited Canada-wide calling and unlimited international text and picture messages. You can also add on various Boosters as needed if ever you find yourself running out of data or in need of something extra. So, this is a very fully featured prepaid plan, but also a flexible one.

Other options include the Alcatel Go Flip, which is perfect for people who just like to keep things simple, and the Alcatel 1, a perfectly decent budget phone.
